Voting rights announcement

With the Tuesday, Nov. 8, election drawing near, we are reminded of the importance of our right to vote, a right that defines our nation as a democracy.

WSU supports employee participation in the upcoming election and would like to remind everyone to consult Policy 3.17 Political Activity (http://webs.wichita.edu/inaudit/ch3_17.htm) for any questions, and for a reminder on the university's nonprofit restrictions on political campaign activities. In addition, employees should never be prevented from or in any way disciplined for exercising their right to vote. Employees may also be entitled to paid time off to vote under state law.

In short, the following paid and unpaid leave policies will be followed:

Paid time off to vote: If election polls are not open at least two hours before or two hours after an employee's normally scheduled work shift, sufficient paid leave time, not to exceed two hours, will be granted to permit the employee to vote.

If the polls are open prior to or after an employee's normally scheduled work shift, but it is for a period less than two consecutive hours, the employee will be granted time off to vote for such a period that, when added to the period of time the polls are so open, will not exceed two hours.

Unpaid time off or vacation leave: Employees may use vacation leave or time off without pay to: (1) assist at any voting booth or election site; (2) assist a child, spouse, parent or sibling (including step, half and adoptive) with transportation to and from a polling site; or (3) travel to or from a voting site or to vote in an election when all "Paid Time Off to Vote" has been exhausted or is otherwise not available.
