Post-election commentary by Neal Allen
Kansas Republicans continued their long record of success at the federal level, with Sen. Jerry Moran and Rep. Mike Pompeo winning reelection easily. Donald Trump won Kansas easily, continuing the Republican streak of winning the state since 1964.
The results tell a different story on the state level, with conservative Republicans losing strength in Topeka, likely due to the continued unpopularity of Gov. Sam Brownback. Republicans will retain their majorities in the State House and State Senate, although Democrats and moderate Republicans have made significant gains.
Reinstating small business income taxes and expanding Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act will have more support in the next legislative session, but conservative Republicans may still have a working majority in the State House.
