Wichita State Campus Progress to host event

Wichita State Campus Progress will host an event aimed at seeking a fair tuition, lessening student debt and freezing the current tuition in the state of Kansas by organizing "Debt Hits Hard: The Necessity of College Affordability" at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 16, in 203 Rhatigan Student Center. This issue is being addressed by universities around the country seeking to address the needs of all college students as the average debt of every student rises each year, along with tuition. Free pizza will be provided.

Campus Progress, part of the Center for American Progress, works to help young people -- advocates, activists, journalists, artists -- make their voices heard on issues that matter.

Through an online magazine and student publications, public events, multimedia projects and grassroots issue campaigns, Campus Progress acts to empower new progressive leaders nationwide as they develop fresh ideas, communicate in new ways, push policy outcomes in a progressive direction and build a strong progressive movement.

The speakers will include Bill Shiebler, National Field Director, United States Student Association; Pedro de la Torre III, advocacy senior associate from Campus Progress; and Lindsay McCluskey, Massachusetts Students Uniting.

The rising cost of tuition and financial aid cuts are making it harder for people to attend college, and many young people are burdened with mountains of student loan debt. Students of all ages are falling behind as the gap between the rich and the poor widens. Last week's House of Representatives and U.S. Senate votes to pass the House and Senate budget was the first short-term victory for students in this national campaign. However, there are many forces working to take out investments to education that are good for students.
