Alumni Association to host 'Community Policing: Building Relationships' event

Community policing -- the practice of policing that focuses on building ties and working closely with community members -- is big with Wichita Police Department Chief Gordon Ramsay. Since his arrival in Wichita in January 2016, Chief Ramsay has diligently worked to learn everything he can about Wichita and its citizens. He goes out on calls with his officers, communicates with community members directly and through social media and is prepared to field questions at many of the scores of public events he attends.

The Wichita State Alumni Association will host one such public event. "Community Policing: Building Relationships" will be the third presentation in the WSUAA's 2016-17 WSU Distinguished Speaker Series. This lecture and panel discussion about policing and community relations will be from 6-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 13, at Marcus Welcome Center.

After Ramsay's presentation, three Wichita State graduates will join him for a panel discussion: Michael Birzer, director of WSU's School of Community Affairs and criminal justice professor; WPD sergeant and WSU criminal justice graduate student Wendell Nicholson; and Paige Keller, a psychology graduate who is now a graduate student majoring in criminal justice.
