April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Ten years ago, the Italian Supreme Court overturned a rape conviction because the victim wore jeans. The justices stated that the victim must have helped her attacker remove her jeans, from which they inferred consent. Enraged by the verdict, the women in the Italian Parliament launched into action and protested by wearing jeans on the steps of the Supreme Court. Since then, Peace Over Violence (out of Los Angeles) began sponsoring Denim Day remembrance events in the United States. In an effort to help eliminate persistent harmful attitudes regarding why, where and how women are raped, FOCUS (Feminists on Campus Uniting Students) will sponsor the second annual Denim Day at WSU Wednesday, April 22. Wear denim that day to show your support for eliminating violence against women and girls.
