Many employees to receive 1 percent raise

Statement to Wichita State University employees from President John Bardo:

In consultation with the Executive Team, I've decided that about 1,700 benefits-eligible employees making up to $90,000 a year will begin seeing a 1 percent raise on the Jan. 13, 2017 pay date.

Given state budget problems, many of our employees have gone too long without raises. While 1 percent won't make a big difference, we want staff and faculty to know they are appreciated and we are conscious every day of their contributions. Raises will go to those with satisfactory or better performance.

These raises will be built into our budget, even as we have to cut costs elsewhere. I've been talking recently with the heads of employee and student constituency groups about forming a special advisory committee on budget matters to make sure our spending is aligned with the strategic goals of the university. You'll be hearing more about that in weeks to come.

As we work through these difficult issues, we are guided by our important, shared mission as an essential educational, cultural and economic driver for Kansas and the greater public good.
