2017 updated Wichita Employment Forecast released
In 2017, Wichita total nonfarm employment is expected to increase by 2,906 jobs, which implies the employment growth rate is anticipated to be 1 percent.
The service sectors (2,331 jobs) are forecasted to be the fastest growing portion of the Wichita area economy, with 1.7 percent growth. The trade, transportation and utilities (499 jobs) sector is expected to have a growth rate of 0.9 percent. The production sectors (-58 jobs) are projected to contract by 0.1 percent. Whereas, the government sector (134 jobs) is projected to increase slightly, growing by 0.3 percent growth.
"The Wichita economy continues with the moderate growth it has seen over the past couple of years, fighting at or below its weight class," says CEDBR Director Jeremy Hill. "The global economy and the value of the dollar are putting the regional economy in its place, preventing stronger growth, as seen at the U.S. level. Overall, Wichita has taken a lot of jabs in the economic ring, and has shown some fancy boxing footwork. However, it has yet to throw any significant blows to improve its economic position."
