Social Work POWER Conference coming in February

The School of Social Work will host the 14th annual POWER (Pride of Wichita Empowerment Rally) Conference from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24, at Hughes Metropolitan Complex. This conference is for social work and social service practitioners in the Wichita and south-central Kansas area. Our theme is "The Widening Gap: Stories from the Front Lines of Social Work," focusing on inequality in access, services and resources and the problem of poor shaming, which seems to be accelerating.

Our keynote speaker is Sarah Smarsh, a New York Times reporter and author who has written a book about growing up on the edge of poverty in Kansas and the problems of the poor and near poor.

In addition, Sheldon Weisgrau, director of a program from Topeka seeking to reinstate and expand Medicaid services in Kansas, will speak.
