Counseling and Testing Center's Meladee Garst receives state TRIO Achiever Award

Meladee Garst, psychologist in the Counseling and Testing Center (CTC), was recently awarded the TRIO Achiever award for the tristate (Missouri, Kansas and Nebraska) chapter of the Educational Opportunity Association (EOA) regional organization of college access and success professionals.

Garst participated in the McNair Scholars Program, a TRIO program, as an undergraduate student from 2005-07, at Wichita State before earning her doctorate from Oklahoma State University in Counseling Psychology.

In addition to her clinical duties of helping students, Garst coordinates efforts of the CTC to reach out to underserved / marginalized students on the WSU campus. She is recognized as an outstanding TRIO alumnus who has made significant civic, community and professional contributions through her career in the same state in which she was a participant in the program.

Garst was honored at the annual MO-KAN-NE TRIO Banquet on April 6, in Kansas City, Missouri, during their three-day professional conference. We congratulate her for being one of two recipients for this prestigious award.

The McNair Scholars Program serves first-generation, low income and underrepresented college students who have the desire to pursue graduate studies, with the ultimate goal of attaining a doctoral degree. Garst is considered to be one of the many shining stars from the WSU McNair Scholars Program, which has been on the WSU campus since 1995.
