The 13th Amendment to the Constitution abolished slavery in the United States. The film "13th" examines the way that America's prison system has become another form of slavery for American minority populations. The film screening, hosted by the Office of Diversity and Inclusion and Wichita Public Libraries, will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 31, in the CAC Theater. From the profitability of prison labor to the development of private prisons, Ava DuVernay's documentary makes clear that the impact of our nation's laws, sentencing and imprisonment have disproportionately affected communities of color. Join us as we screen the film that the Boston Globe called "one of the best movies of 2016."
