'States of Happiness' to be performed Sept. 27-Oct. 1

The WSU School of Performing Arts / Theatre presents "States of Happiness" by Josh Whedon, winner of the WSU Theatre Program's 2017 National Playwriting Competition. Performances are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 27-Saturday, Sept. 30, and 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 30 and Oct. 1, in Welsbacher Theatre in Hughes Metropolitan Complex.

James desperately seeks meaning, but doesn't know where to look. She learns of a service that will allow her to do something extraordinary. But through this, she tumbles into an experiment that may have drastic repercussions. Will this actually help her, or will it send her further into hopelessness?

Playwright Joshua Whedon is a recent graduate from the University of Central Florida, where he earned a B.A. in Theatre Studies with minors in creative writing and film. During his undergraduate career he was featured in several plays at Theatre UCF.

"States of Happiness" was first conceived as a 10-minute play for an independent study during his senior year. As of now, it is his first full-length piece being performed. Josh currently resides in Orlando and is employed at Universal Studios.

States of Happiness is directed by theatre major Madison Bishop with theatre major Stephanie Crump as Stage Manager.

The cast features theatre majors Payton Dickerson as James 1, Lance Vaillancourt as James 2, TJ Wade as James 3, and music theatre major Haylee Couey as James 4.

The production team includes theatre students Mariah Clements (Scenery), Jon Commons (Lighting), Angie Thompson (Costumes), Jessica Curtiss (Sound), and theatre professor Ed Baker (Props and Tech Director).
