WSU's TRIO Upward Bound Math Science Center earns $1.6 million grant award

Kaye Monk-Morgan, director of the TRIO Upward Bound Math Science (UBMS) Center, received notification in late August that efforts to secure a five-year, $1.6 million grant to continue services to Kansas students with interests in STEM studies were successful. The award from the U.S. Department of Education funds year-round academic and college planning services, including a six-week residential experience for 74 high schools from a number of Kansas high schools in Wichita, Kansas City, Garden City and Hutchinson.

The UBMS Center has been hosted on the Wichita State campus for 26 years, and roughly one-third of their alumni choose to attend WSU after high school graduation.

WSU is host to 10 TRIO programs, including five Upward Bound projects and three GEAR UP programs. They have more programs that any other Regents institution.

The Federal TRIO Programs (TRIO) are Federal outreach and student services programs designed to identify and provide services for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. TRIO includes eight programs targeted to serve and assist low-income individuals, first-generation college students and individuals with disabilities to progress through the academic pipeline from middle school to post-baccalaureate programs. TRIO also includes a training program for directors and staff of TRIO projects. For more information on TRIO programs and services, go to http://bit.ly/TRIOhome.
