Language and Linguistics Colloquium Series event set for Oct. 18

M'Balia Thomas, assistant professor in KU's School of Education, will present her "Space, Place, & Race in Antoine Dodson's 'Bed Intruder:' A Stylistic Analysis" at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 18, in 208 Hubbard Hall. The talk is part of the Language and Linguistics Colloquium Series. This presentation addresses the ideological division of space by gender, race, class, public / private, and how language is shaped by, negotiated and policed in ideological spaces. Thomas draws upon literary and media examples -- namely the Antoine Dodson 'Bed Intruder' interview (July 28, 2010) -- to explore this sociocultural and linguistic phenomenon. Students and faculty from all disciplines are invited to attend.
