Faculty Development Series kicks off Aug. 26

A Faculty Development Series, "The Responsible Conduct of Research," will kick off with the lecture, "Research Integrity: What it is and why it matters," at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 26, in the Marcus Welcome Center. Snacks and beverages will be provided. The presenter will be David Resnik, bioethicist and IRB chair for the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences at the National Institutes of Health. There will be a wine and cheese reception following Resnik's lecture. The Faculty Development Series, presented by the Center for Teaching and Research Excellence and the Office of Research Administration, will feature a series of events for faculty, graduate students and other researchers on legal, ethical and financial issues in research. RSVP to ctre@wichita.edu.

Resnik has published eight books and more than 160 articles on topics in bioethics, the ethics of scientific research and philosophy of science.

"This will be the beginning of a larger program by which our university will engage the topic of 'The Responsible Conduct of Research' in its many forms, and will explore the means by which research can be conducted safely, ethically, and, above all, effectively," said David McDonald, associate provost for research and Graduate School dean.

The goal is to create a campuswide conversation about research issues, and to further enhance WSU's research profile. The series will feature presentations by individual speakers, panel discussions and town hall meetings.

Later this semester, the Responsible Conduct of Research Series will host the following events:

On the Care and Feeding of Graduate Students
Academic Authorship
Data Management
