WSU, American Cancer Society team up to 'Shock Cancer'

The Wichita State Athletic Department will join forces with the American Cancer Society to 'Shock Cancer' directly before Shocker Madness on Saturday, Oct. 17.

Head basketball coaches Gregg Marshall and Jody Adams will lead their teams and the Wichita community on the inaugural Shock Cancer Walk before showcasing their teams at Shocker Madness. Those who register to walk in the event will have the opportunity to meet their 2009-10 Shocker basketball teams while supporting a worthy cause.

All proceeds generated through walkers' registration fees, donations and merchandise will go directly to the American Cancer Society. The money will stay in Wichita to be used for all forms of cancer research, as well as curbing costs associated with other issues those affected by cancer will face during their battle with the disease.

Anyone interested in participating in the event can register as an individual, or create or join a team on the official Web site, http://www.ShockCancerWalk.org. On-site registration also will be available on walk day starting at 4 p.m. in front of the Shocker ticket office. A $10 fee will be assessed upon registering, and participants who raise $100 will receive a T-shirt commemorating the event.

The 1.5-mile walk kicks off with a shotgun start by 93.9 personality Greg Williams at 5 p.m. Starting and finishing at Charles Koch Arena, the walk will provide participants the chance to stroll past the Shockers' athletic facilities, including the new WSU baseball indoor hitting facility.

A special celebration to honor cancer survivors will take place before Shocker Madness gets under way at 6:45 pm.
