Disability Menotring Day looks at 'Careers for Tomorrow'

"Careers for Tomorrow" was the theme for Disability Mentoring Day on Wednesday, Oct. 21. Disability Mentoring Day provides a group of young job seekers living with disabilities the opportunity to shadow local employers matching their career interest. This job shadowing event was sponsored by Envision, the City of Wichita, Sedgwick County, Working Healthy and WSU. Guest speakers included Deltha Colvin, assistant vice president of campus life at WSU.

It is a national effort of the American Association of People with Disabilities, which provides students and job seekers with disabilities an opportunity to explore their career development through on-sight job exploration with local businesses, while providing insight to employers about hiring job seekers with disabilities.

On Oct. 21, mentees met at Envision, before spending time with a professional in their desired work setting to learn about that person's job. Work settings include public/private, profit/nonprofit and range from operations to law.

After the morning activities, mentors and students returned to Envision to hear from guest speakers.

The event was planned by the Greater Wichita Area Disability Mentoring Day Committee.
