Student participation, cooperation sought with 2010 Census

A letter is being sent to WSU students from Wade Robinson, vice president for Campus Life and University Relations, asking students to participate and cooperate with the 2010 Census.

March 25, 2010

Dear Students,

As you know, the U.S. Census Bureau is currently engaged in facilitating the 2010 Census, an effort which seeks to count everyone residing in the United States. Required by the U.S. Constitution, the census is conducted once every 10 years. Census data affect political representation and direct the distribution of billions of dollars in annual federal funding. Census data affect funding for critical services (such as college tuition grant and loan programs) and help shape community decisions for the rest of the decade. See www.2010census.gov.

In connection with the federal census, the Kansas Constitution requires that, for purposes of representation in the Kansas State Legislature, college students be counted at their permanent residences. The Kansas census adjustment project will require distribution of a questionnaire to each student enrolled in a Kansas college or university for the Spring Semester of 2010. The questionnaire will ask each student what her/his permanent residence is as of April 1, 2010. Residency information provided on the questionnaire will NOT affect your college mailing address, tuition, income tax rates or voting location and all information will be kept strictly confidential.

Wichita State University students can access the student questionnaire by clicking on the following link: https://www.kssos.org/census/entry.aspx?ID=S. Preliminary sampling has shown that it is easy to complete the questionnaire and only takes a few minutes.

**Important Note -- Use Your myWSU ID**
On the first page of the 2010 Census Adjustment form you will see several boxes to input your information. It is very important that you use your myWSU ID as the value in the 'Student ID' box. This information will be used to notify Wichita State University that you have taken the census survey.

Kansas law mandates that Wichita State University cooperate with the Kansas Secretary of State's office in this census adjustment project. On behalf of the University, I am asking for your assistance and cooperation in completing this important project for Kansas. Let's demonstrate Shocker pride by achieving 100 percent participation as quickly as possible!

Questions about the Kansas census adjustment project or the student questionnaire should be directed to the Kansas Secretary of State at 1-800-262-8683 or go to kscensus@kssos.org. Questions may also be directed to me at 978-3021; the Registrar's Office at 978-3089; University Computing at 978-3880; or the University's General Counsel at 978-6791.

Sincerely,

Wade A. Robinson, Ph.D.
Vice President for Campus Life & University Relations
