President Beggs approves policy revision on types of leave

President Beggs has approved the following revision to the WSU Policies and Procedures Manual:
7.08 / Types of Leave (classified) -- http://webs.wichita.edu/inaudit/ch7_08.htm
To provide consistency between Chapter 7 (classified employees) and Chapter 6 (unclassified professional employees) regarding Funeral Leave and Sick Leave, particularly with regard to defining family and family members.

New Funeral Leave Language:

Reasonable leave with pay may be granted to employees by the departmental budget officer for the purpose of attending the funeral of any member of the employee's or employee's spouse's immediate family. The term "immediate family," as used here, includes spouse, parents, grandparents, children, grandchildren, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, or those of similar close relationship by blood, marriage, or adoption. "Reasonable leave" will generally be interpreted as one to six days, depending on the relationship of the deceased to the employee and the travel required. Additional time may be granted at the discretion of the budget officer based on individual circumstances.

Previous Funeral Leave Language:

University employees will be granted leave with pay, to attend a funeral and/or make funeral arrangements in accordance with existing State of Kansas regulations. The employee's relationship to the deceased and necessary travel time will be among the factors considered in determining whether to grant funeral leave and the amount of leave to be granted. Such leave will in no case exceed 6 working days. For additional time off, vacation leave should be requested and approved by the supervisor. Funeral leave is recorded for the exact number of hours used in quarter hour increments.
