WSU remembers Oct. 2, 1970

On Oct. 2, 1970, WSU and the community were united through tragedy when one of two planes en route to a game with Utah State University in Logan, Utah, crashed on Mt. Trelease near Silver Plume, Colo. Families and friends of the deceased have been invited to come back for the 40th observance and reconnect with WSU and others who share the tragic experience of the plane crash.

Even though those impacted by Memorial '70 are geographically scattered, they are still united as a result of the events of Oct. 2, 1970. Members of the 1970 team have created a 40th anniversary memorial shirt that bears a replica of the 1970 football helmet with the words "WSU 1970: Still A Team 2010."

About 170 teammates, friends and families from all across the country plan to attend activities Oct. 1 and 2, many of them first-time observance attendees. Among them will be John Putt, Tony Adams and Chuck Mills.

On Oct. 2, 1970, John Putt was a young Alpine Rescue Squad member and one of the first responders to the crash. He shares his experience with the plane crash in the KPTS-produced documentary "Black & Gold: Remembering the WSU Plane Crash." Tony Adams was the quarterback for Utah State and will give remarks on behalf of his 1970 Utah State team. Former Utah State head coach Chuck Mills is also scheduled to attend.

On Friday, Oct. 1, "Team Time" has been set aside for players and coaches of the 1970 team. Later in the evening there will be a reception and dinner in the Eck Stadium All American Club that will include players and their families, as well as families of the deceased.

At 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, the annual ceremony of remembrance will be held at Wichita State's Memorial '70, located on Alumni Drive near 18th and Hillside. The ceremony will honor the 31 WSU football players, administrators and supporters who died in the plane crash. The ceremony is open to the public, and a continental breakfast will follow in the McKnight Atrium, east of the memorial.
