Investment returns for WSU Foundation's endowment exceed national average

The Wichita State University Foundation beat the national average and the top two largest university endowments in gains during fiscal year 2010.

"Our return, which averages the mix of stocks, bonds, hedge funds, real estate and other investments, was a 14.9 percent gain during fiscal year 2010," said Elizabeth King, president and CEO of the WSU Foundation.

The comparison is based on the preliminary results of an annual study by the National Association of College and University Business Officers and the Commonfund Institute, which was released Nov. 3. It stated that the average gain for the university endowments was 12.6 percent in fiscal year 2010. The full study will be released in January 2011.

"Members of the investment committee meet monthly to assure that we stay current with the fluctuations in the capital markets, take advantage of investment opportunities as they arise and advise the leadership of the WSU Foundation on how to best secure and grow its endowment," said Craig Barton '83, WSU Foundation board chair and FY10 investment committee chair. "I am certainly pleased with these results and hope for additional gains in the year ahead."

The WSU Foundation closed its books on June 30, 2010, with nearly $30 million in outright giving.
