* Here's how you can find out if the university is open or closed when winter weather turns messy. Once a decision is made, the University Activity Line will be updated at 978-6633, option 2. The university website also will provide information on its home page at http://www.wichita.edu if WSU is closing. If you've subscribed to Shocker Alert, you will receive a text message on your cell phone with the pertinent information. You can sign up for those text messages at http://www.wichita.edu/alert. University message boards also will provide information.

* Juan Melendez, who spent 18 years on death row in a Florida prison, will share his remarkable story "Life on Death Row -- Juan Melendez: Innocent" at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 1, in the CAC Theater. Admission is free. http://www.wichita.edu/thisis/wsunews/news/?nid=1332

* Student assistant and graduate assistantship ePAF training sessions for originators and approvers are scheduled today (Monday, Jan. 31), Wednesday, Feb. 2, and Thursday, Feb. 3. * Campus Recreation is recruiting volunteers to serve as Wellness Champions for their department and share program information and encouraging healthier habits within their work area. Go to http://www.wichita.edu/wellnesschampions to learn more and sign up using the new online form.

* The Office of the Provost is asking faculty to encourage students enrolled in their classes to participate in the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE). E-mail messages, with a link to the online survey, will be sent to students starting Thursday, Feb. 10, asking for their participation. A final reminder will go out on Tuesday, March 29. In appreciation for participating, WSU will enter all students into a drawing for five gift certificates worth $100 each. * The Tilford Commission has created a new grant for faculty to promote the establishment of more diversity-related courses at WSU.
