TEACH grant helps WSU teacher education students

WSU placed 57th out of 155 research universities ranked by the amount of TEACH grant funds distributed to students from academic year 2008 through 2010, according to a recent report by the Council of Academic Deans from Research Education Institutions. A total disbursement of $197,843 was made to 63 WSU students in the College of Education's teacher education program. At WSU, students must have completed their sophomore year before entering the teacher education program.

The Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education Grant (TEACH Grant) program was created in 2007 by the U.S. Department of Education. The grant provides funds to students who plan to complete coursework required to begin a teaching career and who agree to teach full-time for at least four years in a high-need field and in a school that serves low-income students. Up to $4,000 per year is awarded to qualifying students. For recipients who do not fulfill the teaching requirement, the scholarship becomes a loan with interest.
