Co-op hosts annual appreciation breakfast

Co-op and internship employers, faculty and staff joined the Office of Cooperative Education and Work-based Learning and a few representative students in the Marcus Welcome Center for an appreciation breakfast April 26. The event was arranged to thank all those who have supported the Office of Cooperative Education during the 2011-2012 school year.

The 2012 Faculty Adviser award went to David Koert, professor of mechanical engineering. Koert was nominated by Debay Woldeyesus, who worked as a co-op student at Hawker Beechcraft.

"His academic and personal advice have immensely helped me in deciding what I wanted to do after my bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering," Woldeyesus said in his nomination letter. "Thank you, Dr. Koert, for your wisdom and your open-door policy. You rock!"

The award for 2012 Employer of the Year was presented to Cammy Houston of Communities in Schools. Houston was nominated by co-op student Beatrice Burchill.

"Going to work is by far the best part of my day. Cammy is wonderful," Burchill said. "I feel very comfortable around her. I'm always encouraged to ask questions, and she goes above and beyond in providing me with information -- even if I don't ask."

The co-op office recognized President Don Beggs for his commitment to the co-op program throughout his time at WSU.

Jaime Coronado Newman of Spirit AeroSystems was recognized for winning the 2012 Charles F. Kettering Award from the Cooperative Education and Internship Association. The award is given to an employer who provided outstanding resources and service to cooperative education and internships.

Senior education coordinator Cathy Razook-Ellsworth was recognized for 30 years of service in the Office of Cooperative Education.

Congratulations to our award winners and thank you to all who have supported the Office of Cooperative Education.
