Winners announced from Shining Stars Awards Gala

Wichita State's African American Faculty and Staff Association held its Shining Star Awards Gala Sept. 29. This formal dress event honored persons of distinction on the WSU campus and in the broader Wichita community. All proceeds from this event are going to the AAFSA Scholarship Fund.

The award winners were Charles F. McAfee (Community Service Legacy Award-Male); Bobbye J. Humphrey (Community Service Legacy Award-Female); Prisca Barnes (Community Service Rising Star Award); Brian Black (Community Service Social Justice Award); Eston Dilworth (Outstanding Undergraduate Greek Award-Male); Kristina Durham (Outstanding Undergraduate Greek Award-Female); Hassan Ramzah (Outstanding Graduate Greek Award-Male); Leah George (Outstanding Graduate Greek Award-Female); Brittany Carson (Outstanding WSU Student Award); Chinyere Okafor (Outstanding WSU Faculty Award); Jay Price (Outstanding WSU Faculty Research Award); William "Bill" Bischoff (Outstanding WSU Administrator Award); Jackie Staley (Outstanding WSU Staff Award); Kiah Duggins (Outstanding Wichita High School Student Award); Teresa Lovelady (Outstanding Community Leadership Award); Rev. Lincoln and First Lady Annie Montgomery (Outstanding Faith-Based Activity Award); and Rhonda K. Lewis (Outstanding AAFSA Member Award).

In addition, Linwood Sexton received special recognition with the Outstanding WSU Legend Award.

Besides the issuing of awards, the evening featured entertainment from the Wichita Contemporary Dance Theater and the musical group Aesthetic. There was also special recognition given to recently deceased Anderson Eugene "Gene" Jackson of Jackson Mortuary and Larry G. Elliott for a scholarship created in their honor.
