The Barton School of Business at Wichita State University will welcome leadership expert, educator, executive and author Margaret Andrews as its next distinguished speaker as part of the School’s Centennial celebration. An interactive keynote will take place Tuesday, October 27, at 9:30 a.m. in the Fidelity Bank Ballroom in Woolsey Hall. Doors will open at 9 a.m.
Andrews will bring decades of experience spanning business and higher education to the Barton School for conversations focused on leadership, creativity, emotional intelligence and the skills professionals need to lead themselves and others effectively.
“As we celebrate 100 years of the Barton School, we are also looking ahead to the leaders who will shape the next century of business,” said Dr. Larisa Genin, dean of the Barton School of Business. “Margaret brings a remarkable combination of academic insight, executive experience and a genuine understanding of the human side of leadership. Her work challenges people to become more thoughtful, self-aware and effective leaders, and we are thrilled to bring that perspective to our students and community during this milestone year.”
Andrews is a professional speaker, executive and academic leader with expertise spanning business, higher education and leadership development. She teaches several of Harvard’s most popular leadership courses and serves as Co-Faculty Director of an executive program at Harvard Medical School. Her career also includes leadership roles at MIT Sloan, Hult International Business School and Harvard University, as well as experience in accounting, marketing and strategy consulting. Today, she leads The MYLO Center, a private leadership development firm.
“Leadership isn’t something that begins when someone gives you a bigger title or a team to manage,” Andrews said. “It begins with learning how to manage yourself. You must have a good understanding of how you think, how you respond under pressure and how your behavior affects the people around you. I’m looking forward to exploring those ideas with Wichita State students and the Wichita community and giving them practical tools they can use wherever their careers take them.”
Andrews is the author of Manage Yourself to Lead Others, published in 2025. Her writing has appeared in Leader to Leader, Training Industry Magazine and Psychology Today, and her work has been featured in publications including Business Week, Forbes, The Wall Street Journal and The Times of India. She earned her undergraduate degree from the University of California, Berkeley and her graduate degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
“Some of the most important leadership lessons our students can learn have nothing to do with a title,” Genin said. “They are about self-awareness, curiosity, emotional intelligence and the ability to bring out the best in others. Margaret’s work challenges people to think differently about what it means to lead, and that is exactly the kind of conversation we want to create at the Barton School.”
Andrews’ visit reflects the Barton School’s commitment to connecting students with accomplished leaders whose experiences complement classroom learning and provide practical perspectives on navigating careers, organizations and change. Through its distinguished speaker programming, the Barton School brings executives, entrepreneurs, innovators and thought leaders to Wichita State to engage directly with students and the broader community.
Following the program, attendees are invited to remain in Woolsey Hall for networking and a book signing with Andrews featuring Manage Yourself to Lead Others.
