The W. Frank Barton School of Business at Wichita State University has launched a new student initiative designed to prepare undergraduates for success in one of the most competitive fields in business. The Consulting Club, which began in Fall 2024, offers students an immersive introduction to the world of consulting through real-world case studies, industry mentorship, and high-impact learning experiences.
Founded by Fred Eilts, Senior Educator in the Department of Finance, Real Estate and Decision Science, the club was built to bridge academic learning with industry expectations. Designed to emphasizes both strategic rigor and practical application, the club helps students develop skills that translate directly to high-demand consulting roles.
“Consulting demands a unique mix of analytical thinking, creativity, and presence,” said Eilts. “Our club gives students early exposure to those demands and connects them directly with professionals who’ve walked the same path.”
The initiative received strong support from Deloitte Consulting, which helped shape the club’s early curriculum and engagement opportunities. The inaugural semester attracted 18 students, several of whom have already secured internships with Deloitte and other leading firms. Programming included hands-on workshops, networking sessions, and guided case study work supported by Deloitte professionals, many of whom are Wichita State alumni.
The effort was championed by Michael Schlotterbeck, Principal at Deloitte Consulting, and John Coleman, Manager of Supply Chain & Network Operations, alongside a dedicated group of Deloitte team members. Their involvement reflects a growing commitment to academic-industry partnerships that deliver real value to students and employers alike.
“The support from Deloitte was a game-changer,” Eilts added. “Our students not only learned the frameworks and expectations of the consulting world, but also built relationships that are opening doors.”
The Consulting Club plans to expand its reach and programming in Spring 2025, empowering more students to engage in transformative learning experiences that prepare them for strategic, high-stakes roles in business.
