First-gen student finds reassurance in career through WSU

Wichita State strategic communications major and first-generation student Seth Crawford always knew that he was meant to go to college. Originally from Marion, Kansas, Seth decided WSU would be his vehicle to growth.

“I wanted to do something different, and I knew to do that I had to get educated and progress my thinking,” says Seth.

Before coming to WSU, Seth considered attending other regional schools.

“What stood out about WSU to me was that it fit my attitude. Here they pride themselves on being different and progressing,” says Seth.

Coming from a small town, Wichita was a bit of a culture shock.

“It made me realize how much is out there: the people, the food, the music, the culture, everything,” he says.

Seth has worked as a marketing associate for the Athletics Department and currently works as a marketing intern for the Office of Strategic Communications at WSU.

“I've learned how to express my voice in a way that can impact others, different elements of production, and the importance of collaboration with my team,” says Seth.

He says WSU has allowed him to progress his thinking.

“I wanted to do something different, and WSU gave me the ability to do that,” says Seth.
