A: Wichita State is discontinuing its NCAA men’s and women’s golf programs.

Q: When does the decision take effect?

A: This decision is effective immediately, as the season has just concluded. This timeline allows student- athletes to enter the transfer portal, which is open immediately.

Q: Why was this decision made?

A:This was a difficult decision reached after careful and comprehensive evaluation of Wichita State’s athletics portfolio and resource allocation. Rising operational costs and changes in the collegiate athletics landscape require the university to make thoughtful decisions to preserve the long‑term sustainability and competitive strength of Shocker Athletics. It is a challenging time in higher education, and athletic departments are not immune.

Q: Why were the golf programs selected?

A: No single factor drove this decision. The university evaluated multiple considerations across its athletics programs and made a determination based on long‑term sustainability, available resources, facilities planning and institutional priorities. We recognize the proud history of Wichita State golf and the impact this decision has on those connected to the programs.

Q: How many student-athletes are affected?

A: The 2025-26 women’s golf roster includes nine student‑athletes, and the 2025-26 men’s golf roster includes eight student‑athletes. Of these 17 student-athletes, seven will graduate and/or have exhausted their eligibility as of this 2025-26 season. Athletics personnel will meet with student-athletes individually to help them determine their next steps for their academic and athletic journeys.

Q: What support is being provided to affected student-athletes?

A: Supporting student‑athletes is the university’s top priority. Dedicated staff are working directly with each affected student‑athlete to provide academic, athletic and personal support. Student athletes who choose to continue their education at Wichita State will continue to receive their existing financial assistance, subject to applicable NCAA and university eligibility standards and requirements. Those who choose to pursue opportunities at other institutions will receive individualized guidance and support throughout the transfer process.

Q: What happens to committed and/or incoming golf student-athletes?

A: Athletics staff are working directly with committed and incoming student‑athletes and their families to provide clear information, answer questions and support them as they consider their next steps.

Q: What about the coaches and staff associated with the programs?

A: The university recognizes and appreciates the dedication and contributions of head coaches Judd Easterling and Tom McCurdy and the staff who supported Wichita State golf. Personnel matters will be handled thoughtfully and respectfully.

Q: Does this decision affect Wichita State’s NCAA Division I or American Conference membership?

A: No. Wichita State will continue to sponsor at least 14 sports, as required for NCAA Division I‑AAA (non‑football) membership, and remains a member of the American Conference.
