World Languages Education

The PreK-12 World Languages Program at Wichita State University is a 4-year program designed to prepare teachers of Spanish and French to teach in PreK-12 schools.

World Languages Education Program

Why major in World Languages Education at Wichita State?

  • Students complete a variety of content courses in foreign language, education courses and field experiences leading to a semester of full-time student teaching at the end of the program.

Upon completion of all courses and program assessments, graduates will be eligible to apply for an initial teaching license after they successfully complete the Kansas teacher licensure exams required by the State of Kansas for application for a teacher license or endorsement.

About the Program

Program Description

A total of 120 hours are required to complete a PreK-12 degree in Spanish or French. Within these hours, thirty-three (33) content hours are required for Spanish and thirty (30) hours for French. In these courses students learn the target language, its literature and civilization. Study abroad programs are available for Spanish and French in Mexico and France. For both languages, thirty-eight (38) hours are also needed for Professional Education and forty-two (42) for General Education courses. To complete the program degree and receive a Conditional Licensure Recommendation, by the end of the program students must have 2.5 GPA (overall and WSU), successfully pass all common assessments, the Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) and Praxis II Content Knowledge tests, Kansas Performance Teacher Portfolio (KPTP), and reach the Advanced Low Proficiency Level on the ACTFL Advisory Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI). Separate and detailed checksheets describing the program and its requirements exist for both languages. Throughout the program, students work closely with their general and teacher education advisors in the College of Applied Studies and the Fairmount College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
