As we celebrate the College of Education's 100th anniversary, I am proud of our rich history at Wichita State University and the generations of Shockers who have made a difference in schools, organizations, and communities across Kansas and beyond. Our centennial is an opportunity to honor this legacy and recognize those who continue to shape our future. The Shocker spirit of innovation, collaboration, and academic excellence is reflected in the accomplishments of our graduates and the opportunities we create for today's students.
One of the things that makes Wichita State special is our commitment to providing an accessible, affordable, and high-quality education. Each year, the College of Education awards more than $750,000 in scholarships, thanks to the generosity of our donors and community partners. These scholarships help reduce financial barriers for students balancing their education with employment and family responsibilities. Yet, many more students would benefit from financial assistance, making continued investment in scholarships essential to student success.
Another defining feature of a Wichita State education is applied learning. Through partnerships with Kansas schools, supervised counseling services in our WISE Clinic, internships, and research, our students gain valuable professional experience while contributing to the communities we serve. These opportunities prepare graduates with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to succeed in their careers.
This year's newsletter highlights the people and programs shaping our College's future. Our 2026 Hall of Fame honorees exemplify the professional excellence and leadership of our alumni. We are also expanding educational opportunities through new programs such as Applied Behavior Analysis and strengthening literacy education across Kansas through our Collaborative Literacy Education, Advancement, and Research (CLEAR) initiative, supported by funding from the Kansas Blueprint for Literacy.
As we begin our second century, we remain committed to Wichita State University's mission of expanding access to high-quality education, preparing graduates to meet Kansas workforce needs, and contributing to economic and community prosperity.
I am deeply grateful to our alumni, donors, and friends for your continued commitment to the College of Education. Your generosity, engagement, and advocacy make a meaningful difference for our students and the communities they will serve. Together, we are building on a century of excellence and creating opportunities for future generations of Shockers.
With Shocker pride and appreciation,
Jennifer Friend, Ph.D.
