After a decade in the WSU Department of Philosophy, Dr. Brian Hepburn is retiring at the end of the Spring 2025 semester.

While at WSU Dr. Hepburn's teaching and research focused on engineering ethics and the history and philosophy of the physical sciences. Much of his work concerned Euler, Newtonian Mechanics, scientific honesty, scientific change, and explanation. His latest project, Engineering Proficiency, reenvisions ethics and professional standards for engineers today. Here are a few highlights from Brian's work at WSU:

  • Philosophy Undergraduate Coordinator 2020-2024

"By far, the most rewarding part of the year has been serving as Undergraduate Advisor. I enjoy interacting with our majors, doing what I can to help with their success. I especially enjoying thinking about the future success of the department, how to make philosophy a bigger part of the WSU educational experience, touting all that our small department has to offer, and leveraging all of that to attract many more majors to the program."  - Dr. Brian Hepburn

  • Barrier Distinguished Teaching Award 2024.

The Barrier award "recognizes a well-established record of excellence in teaching; an impact on the lives and career choices of students; and the ability to apply the results of research or the experience of community or professorial service to enliven teaching and enrich the understanding of students." - LAS Spring 2024 Newsletter
