LightBox Expo is an annual gathering for artists interested in or working in the animation industry
and its adjacent fields. Over the course of a weekend, artists from around the globe
gather to give talks and workshops covering anything and everything related to animation.
All are welcome! Fresh graduates, industry veterans, activists and companies all convene
at LightBox. Between the talks, the evening community events, the artist alleys, and
the community art sessions there's always something to do.
A major benefit of student attendance is networking and portfolio evaluation. Students
often get connected with recruiters from major employers like Sony Pictures Animation,
Dreamworks, Netflix Animation, Disney animation, Lucasfilm, etc. They also have the
opportunity to sit down with working industry professionals and receive feedback on
their portfolios. Lastly, the best connections are often chance occurrences. Riding
in an elevator connected someone with a senior artist at Industrial Light and Magic,
or heads of indie studios. Lifelong connections between artists form at LightBox,
and those are invaluable.
We typically choose juniors and seniors, based on need. Students further along in
the program often have a greater body of work to show, and have clearer visions for
their careers post-graduation. If a student wouldn't be able to go a later year due
to pending graduation, then we prioritize subsidizing their attendance.
During the day, attendees get to attend talks from industry professionals, who provide
practical advice on building a career in animation or give anecdotes with powerful
messages to encourage artists to keep going. We also get to peruse the artist's alley
or join in the community draw and paint at the front of the convention center. In
the evening, LightBox screens the annual AniMayo film festival, showcasing several
cartoons from different cultures. They also host the Concept Art Awards ceremony,
and screen animated films with exclusive debuts at LightBox.
For students about to attend, please get a portfolio together! Then, design and print
business cards and have a portfolio website or ArtStation live with work samples.
