Major: Ethnic Studies and Women's Studies

After more than two decades away from the classroom, Trayce Nance made the bold decision to return to Wichita State University as an adult learner—and hasn’t looked back since.

Driven by a deep interest in diversity and culture, Trayce found the perfect academic fit in Ethnic Studies and Women’s Studies. “I wanted to understand the world more deeply, and these majors opened that door for me,” she said. Her journey is now guided by a clear goal: earning her degree and continuing on to pursue a master’s in Library and Information Sciences, with the ultimate dream of becoming an archivist.

Trayce’s story is one of resilience, purpose, and inspiration. She’s proving that it’s never too late to chase your dreams. “This journey has been long and rewarding,” she said. “I’m committed to building a better career and fulfilling my dream of graduating college.”

What motivated you to return to WSU as an adult learner?

I was motivated to return to WSU as an adult learner because I was interested in learning about diversity and culture and so found a major in Ethnic Studies and Women's Studies that helped me with that.

What are some of your goals?

My goal is to get a degree in my major and to continue school pursuing a master's degree in library and information sciences, ultimately becoming an archivist.

Have you faced any significant challenges in your educational journey? How did you overcome them?

I had an issue with balancing work/ school initially but there are time management workshops and advising available to help with that. 

How do you contribute to your school and/or community in a meaningful way?

I never thought I had time to work in my community but after working with the Red Cross I learned that a few hours out of a weekend is not much to ask of me.

What advice would you give to other adult learners considering returning to WSU?

Going to school or returning to school as an adult learner is rewarding and challenging.  Just know that there is support at Wichita State University if decide to take that step. 

How long were you away from school before you came back?

I had been away from school for 22 years before I decided to return.  This has been a long and rewarding journey I have been on. I am committed to pursuing a better career and fulfilling a dream of graduation college.
