Join us for the Watkins Visiting Professor Series featuring Douglas Emlen. Emlen will present th talk, "Extreme Weapons: A Natural History."
Douglas Emlen, Ph.D., is Montana Regents Professor of Biology at the University of Montana. He is interested in how animal structures evolve to extreme proportions and focuses on weapons of “sexual selection,” including antlers, and especially the outlandish horns of rhinoceros beetles. His research leads to an exploration of the human military arms races and the most powerful weapons on the planet. His work has been featured in outlets including The New York Times and National Public Radio’s Science Friday. He was awarded UM’s Distinguished Teaching Award and named the Carnegie/CASE Montana Professor of the Year. Dr. Emlen is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences.
