Overview

Dr. Jordan Butcher studies U.S. state legislatures with a focus on the careers of lawmakers. Her research spans examining why lawmakers enter and exit the legislature, to why certain groups are more or less likely to serve. In particular, she is exploring the factors that relate to women rising to leadership in the legislature. Additionally, she prioritizes research with students; these projects currently center on evaluating veteran policy favorability in the states, the partisan pushes of legislative term limits, and updating measures of turnover. She is an active member of Women in Legislative Studies and currently serves on the State Oversight Academy Board with the Levin Center at Wayne State University. She is also the author of Navigating Term Limits: The Careers of State Legislators, and is published in journals such as Legislative Studies Quarterly, State Politics & Policy Quarterly, American Politics Research, and the Journal of Legislative Studies.
