Additive Manufacturing Adoption

  • Engagement with industry & regulatory authorities including the DoD, GE Additive & Boeing continues in support of apart production qualification white paper to assist industry with the development of qualified factories.  ​
  • Alloy 718 was selected for further investigation and equivalency studies.​
  • The curriculum launched based on current skills expressed by regional industry both through an industry needs survey completed in spring 2023 & the qualitative follow-upthrough lab staff and internal beta-testing. ​
  •  73 suppliers to date are being evaluated for qualified factory audit beta testing.​

Future Factory

  • Distributor training for AMP staff on new Okuma machines in April​
  • RigiMill space preparation. June - 1st week moving racks and material storage, 2nd week digging trench, remainder of month pouring of foundation with six-eight weeks for concrete to cure. Machine set up to start in August. Equipment container shipping in progress.​
  • Metrology tables (4) were received. Set up will begin soon.​
  • Bid accepted to build wall in AMP facility behind metrology lab,enclosing area for metrology training classes. Construction began in late May, waiting for HVAC, electrical, and data updates in the area.​
  • Curriculum development complete and upcoming course offering: Beginning (3 sessions) & Advanced (2 sessions) ASME Y14.5-2018,Digital Applications (2 sessions) ASME Y14.41-3DE, and GPS Conceptsand Applications (1 session) are scheduled between June & October.Courses still in development: laser tracker, CMM and metrology software/hardware interface.​

  • WSU Tech Smart Factory Training System setup nearing completion,focus on starting robotics cohort training in the Fall​
  • WSU Tech partnering with Wichita Public Schools to offer 5 summer middle school STEM camps with estimated 600+ kids attending
HAMR (Hub for Advanced Manufacturing Research)​
  • Construction documents werecompleted, reviewed and approvedby the Kansas Office of Facilities andProperty Management (OFPM).​
  • EDA reviewed and approvedconstruction documents priorof bidding.​
  • Bids were publicly posted on theKansas Register and in the OFPMplan room and on WSU purchasingwebsite.​
  • Pre-bid meeting was held onMarch 13th on WSU campus.​
  • NIAR HAMR Project Kickoff Meetingwith Crossland Construction, May21st​
  • Site fencing & access roads put intoplace, May 22-25th​
Governance and Evaluation​
  • The Chamber has posted student DEI position,will begin evaluating applications, and offerposition with student starting before Fallsemester. They continues to hold Bi-monthlyDEI Advisory Committee meetings​
  • Coalition representation at the SBIR Conferencein Washington DC. June 17-19, 2024​
  • South KS Coalition/RTI bi-weekly planningmeetings for the September BBB RegionalConvening with expected attendance from Mid-West and other manufacturing coalitionmembers & guests.​
  • Brookings published South Kansas case study“Expanding South Kansas. Aerospace clusterinto a resilient advanced manufacturing sectoron May 21st​
  • The KART annual coalition advisory committeemeetings was held on June 6, 2024.​
  • WSU’s economist continues tocollect  economic and industry data for thepublic coalition dashboard​

Regional Workshop in Wichita, Kansas | September 10-12, 2024
Save the date: The EDA Building Better Regions CoP is excited to announce the first regional workshop, which will take place in Wichita, Kansas, on September 10-12, 2024, in partnership with the South Kansas Coalition. The workshops will be an opportunity to connect in person, hear about the work in South Kansas and other regions, and learn from one another. All are invited.
