Cathy Childs

Facility Services

Wichita State University

I have known Cathy for over 21 years, and I have nothing but positive things to say about her. From her dedication and hard work to her kindness and cheerful personality, her work ethic shines through. Cathy is one of the most hardworking people I know. She has truly dedicated her time and effort to not only Facilities Services but to the whole University. A little fun fact, Cathy has been cleaning the President’s Residence her entire 25 years of service—many times without the help of others. She has worked under four different presidents, which means she’s had to adapt to their wants and needs.

If she isn’t busy with another job, she is usually the first one to answer any service calls, and she does it with happiness and urgency. One thing is for sure—if Cathy goes out on a job, it will be completed promptly and efficiently the first time. Cathy also cleaned the residence halls. I didn’t know her personally at that time, but once Housing decided to branch out on their own, I saw Cathy frequently. That’s when I got to know her on a personal level.

In all the years I have known Cathy, I’ve never heard one bad thing about her. That speaks extremely high volumes. When I asked around what people thought of when they think of Cathy, these are some of the things I was given: inspiring, humble, sweetheart, kindhearted, helpful, amazing, understanding, hero, loves people, diaper cakes, pride, good friend to all, and all-around good person to name a few.

Upper management said, “She is a positive force on campus, striving to provide students, faculty, and staff a safe and comfortable experience. She works through physical pain with a smile and never publicly complains. She is a role model for our new employees and a friend to everyone she meets.”

When I talked to President Rick Muma and First Gentleman Rick Case, they said, “Cathy is wonderful. So, when I think of Cathy, the first thing I think of is her reliability. She never misses a beat. Besides that, I trust her, she’s kind, loves to engage in conversation and learn about new things, and is just a delight to be around. And she’s a talker too, which I love about her! I always look forward to seeing Cathy. She takes great care of us, always has a grandkids story to share and worries that she might kill one of my plants when I’m gone! (She hasn’t). They don’t come any better than Cathy!”

Cathy is loyal not only to WSU but to her friends and family as well. She is thoughtful, caring, and giving. I know I can always count on her if I need anything. She is far more than a co-worker or friend—she has become family. I trust her with everything.

She loves crafts, and every Christmas she makes our gifts. She also makes diaper cakes for baby showers, and I’ll never forget all the ones she has made for me. I love it when she shares her projects, and I can see the stages she’s at and the steps she takes. If I had to select one word to describe Cathy, it would be authentic. Having her in my life is like finding a 4-leaf clover. When I grow up, I want to be like Cathy.
