Walking Tour: A Different Side of Wichita State University

Date: Saturday, September 27
Time: 9a-1p
Departure: Social Tap, 4510 E 19th St N Suite #101, Wichita, KS 67208
Cost: $55
Activity Level 3
Meals Included: Lunch
We’ll begin our day in the parking lot of Social Tap, right on the Wichita State University campus. When most people think of Wichita State, iconic landmarks like Corbin Hall or the legacy of Fairmount College often come to mind. But just beyond these familiar stories lies a lesser-known side of campus—one shaped by the complex history along 21st Street. This landscape holds echoes of a Native American boarding school, the grounds of a once-exclusive country club, key moments from the Civil Rights movement, and ties to Wichita’s rich aviation heritage. These stories speak to the deep layers of community, conflict, and change that have helped shape both WSU and the city of Wichita. By exploring this side of campus, we uncover histories that challenge the traditional narrative and invite us to view Wichita State—and the city itself—through a broader, more inclusive lens. After the tour, join us for lunch at Social Tap to continue the conversation and reflect on the morning’s journey through history.
Facilitator: Dr. Jay Price, WSU History Professor

Some highlights will include reflecting at the Field of Empty Chairs, viewing the Survivor Tree and exploring the museum’s timeline of the day’s events. For lunch, we will step into a charming vintage setting at The Old Spaghetti Factory in Bricktown. It’s a family-friendly, classic spot with a unique trolley car dining area inside the restaurant. After lunch, Just a few blocks from the Memorial, we will visit the St. Joseph's Old Cathedral, one of the oldest churches in the city for a guided tour. This historic landmark was heavily damaged in the 1995 bombing and later restored. Learn about its history and architectural features while taking in the peaceful interior and beautiful stained glass windows. We will finish our day with a visit to the Oklahoma Firefighters Museum, located about 15 minutes from downtown. This museum is dedicated to the brave men and women who serve as firefighters, featuring antique fire trucks, equipment, uniforms, and memorabilia dating back to the early 1900s. We will view historic fire engines from the 1920s, a firehouse diorama, and gear and learn about the legacy of firefighting in Oklahoma. As we journey home, we will carry with us a deeper understanding of Oklahoma City’s resilience, history, and spirit.

Four Corners of Kansas Series Part 2: Northwest Kansas

History, Heritage, and the Heart of the Plains

Date: Saturday, November 8
Time: 6:45a-6:30p
Cost: $149
Activity Level 2
Meals Included: Lunch
Set out on a one-of-a-kind journey to the heart of the Great Plains, where ancient history, frontier legends, and small-town charm come together for an unforgettable day in Hays, Kansas. Our adventure begins with a comfortable ride across the rolling Kansas landscape before arriving at the fascinating Sternberg Museum of Natural History. Step into a world where the past comes alive—literally. Towering prehistoric creatures, rare fossils, and engaging exhibits reveal the ancient secrets of the Great Plains. You’ll come face to face with life-sized dinosaurs, explore hands-on discovery rooms, and even see live animals, all under one roof. Whether you’re a curious adult or a young explorer, the museum offers something for every age and interest. After exploring the prehistoric past, we head over to Thirsty’s Brew Pub & Grill for a hearty buffet lunch that’s sure to satisfy. With a welcoming atmosphere and a mouthwatering BBQ spread—complete with classic sides, cornbread muffins, and honey butter—you’ll experience the kind of Midwest hospitality that makes Hays a hidden gem. Recharged and refueled, we make our way to one of Hays’ most iconic sights—its bison herd. Nestled in Frontier Park, this living symbol of the American West roams in a peaceful, open enclosure just across from Historic Fort Hays. Watch these magnificent animals, including a few adorable calves, as they graze in the Kansas sun. It’s a scene that feels like stepping back in time. Next, we explore the historic grounds of Fort Hays, established in 1867 to protect the frontier during the construction of the Union Pacific Railroad. Wander through preserved buildings like the blockhouse, guardhouse, and officers’ quarters while hearing tales of frontier soldiers, Buffalo Soldiers, and pioneers who shaped this region. Through modern exhibits and original structures, you’ll discover how Fort Hays stood at the crossroads of American history. We round out our day with a visit to the breathtaking Basilica of St. Fidelis, affectionately known as the Cathedral of the Plains. With its soaring limestone towers and magnificent stained-glass windows, this architectural marvel offers a moment of peace, reflection, and awe. Designated one of the “8 Wonders of Kansas” and a minor basilica by Pope Francis, it’s a must-see treasure nestled in the heart of Victoria, just a short drive from Hays. With hearts full and minds enriched, we make our way back home, carrying with us stories of dinosaurs, pioneers, bison, and beautiful plains cathedrals—a true celebration of Kansas’ past and present. Reminder- if you attend all four trips in this series, you’ll get 40% off the final trip! The Four Corners of Kansas series will continue in 2026.
