When Sonja Carr was diagnosed with Lupus at the age of 14, her high school career
faced a major setback. She missed more than half her classes and graduated with a
very low GPA. Once she started college, she was motivated to try harder, maintaining
a high GPA and rarely missing class. “It was a tough time for me,” Carr said, “but
I just had to push through.”
She originally chose a Journalism emphasis, but after taking Intro to Multimedia and Audio she realized she loved working with Adobe programs and editing video. Her favorite class so far has been Video Storytelling, taught by Kevin Hager. “It’s the kind of things I want to do with my major, so I guess that’s why it’s my favorite class,” she explained.
She works at Eric Fisher Academy as a receptionist, and has proven that studying communication can help improve all sorts of working skills. Taking Speaking in the Business and Professions made it easier for Carr to discuss certain topics with her boss. She hopes to find a job better-suited to her field of study when she graduates in May 2013. She wants to keep her options open, looking at local positions as well as areas like New York or California.
Her favorite memories at the ESC are from Randy Brown’s class, Writing for the Mass Audience. “He just has so much experience and advice and always keeps the subject captivating,” Carr said. “The ESC faculty members are always extremely helpful.”
There are always interesting projects in progress in communication classes. Carr and her classmates are working on creating a movie in her current Video Storytelling class. “I think our script is amazing and that this project is going to blow people’s minds!” she bragged.
