Harrison Steele uses Electronic Media major in personal and professional areas

Photo of Harrison SteeleYou could say Harrison Steele is well-rounded. He dabbles in everything from dancing, to fitness and health, to cloud photography, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. “Art is in my blood and I want to share my art with the world,” Steele said.

With an Electronic Media emphasis, his main passion is filmmaking. He discovered this love in junior high, when he bought his first video camera and started making funny videos with his friends. He enjoyed Kevin Hager’s Video Storytelling class because it gave him a chance to sharpen and showcase his editing and production skills. Steele helped create a short film for the final project that he was very proud of. “Professor Hager even said it was the best student video project he had ever seen,” Steele said. “I was truly flattered.”

In his last semester as an undergraduate, he’s writing and storyboarding a comedic short film about a mustached man, who lives alone with his cat, wears a suit everywhere and lives only on Vienna sausages and apple juice. And that’s just a spare-time hobby. “It's still a work in progress but makes me laugh just thinking about it,” he said.

One of the most beneficial classes he took was Studio Video Production, an ESC course located at the Media Resource Center on campus. “This is a class every communication student interested in film should take,” he advises. He remembered the class as fun and exciting where each student got a chance to work positions from camera operator to sound mixer.

His favorite thing about the ESC is the accessibility to the computer labs where you can use programs from the newest Adobe Suite. “I can't forget the people at the ESC,” he said. “The staff and teachers are awesome!”

Even his part-time job as a subcontractor building decks, landscaping and painting, has promoted creativity. “I enjoy learning new trades and skills and working outside with my hands,” Steele explains.

His plans within the next year include graduating from WSU and moving to California to work on a professional film set. His dreams seem virtually unlimited. “I hope to compose the music for my first feature film someday,” said Steele.
