DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (PhD) in Communication Sciences and Disorders
Wichita State University (WSU), a Kansas Board of Regents institution, is located
in a growing metropolitan area that offers diverse opportunities for research. The
330-acre campus, which has an outdoor art collection of more than 60 pieces by internationally
known artists, is one of the most beautiful urban campuses in the country.

The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD), which began in 1932
in conjunction with the Institute of Logopedics, has an outstanding clinical service
and research record. In addition, the Evelyn Hendren Cassatt Speech-Language-Hearing
Clinic provides many opportunities for research.

The PhD program in CSD prepares doctoral students to be scholar-scientists in research
and teaching. Individualized doctoral programs of study, mentoring by nationally and
internationally recognized faculty, and specialized practica are provided to help
doctoral students develop optimal research and teaching skills. The goal of the CSD
doctorate is for the student to acquire the knowledge and skills that lead to scholarly
research, expertise in teaching, and professional leadership. To earn the PhD, students
need to acquire a substantial mastery of scientific knowledge and also demonstrate
the ability to use that knowledge independently and creatively.
