Admission to the program

  • Have an undergraduate degree in history or minimum of 18 hours in history
  • Have minimum 2.75 GPA in all undergrad hours and 3.0 GPA in history courses
  • Submit a one-page statement of purpose and writing sample
  • International students: a minimum TOEFL score of 600 paper-based, or 100 internet-based, or and overall band score of 7.5 on the IELTS, or a score of 73 on the PTE-Academic

Inside the Program

The original Pizza Hut was founded in 1958 by two Wichita State students, brothers Dan and Frank Carney.

History Department helps create the Original Pizza Hut Museum

History students have the opportunity to help perserve local history.

Two Wichita State students, brothers Dan and Frank Carney, started the Pizza Hut business in 1958. The restaurant has since become one of the biggest pizza chains in the world. The original building resides at Wichita State as a museum.

History Department Chair Jay Price put the Pizza Hut's story into a local context and think about ways the Carney story helps explain the spirit of entrepreneurship in Wichita.

The museum is now open to the public, and many current Wichita State students serve as docents.

Curriculum

To complete the degree, student can choose from three options:

  • Thesis – Complete a minimum of 31 credit hours and pass a written exam in one comprehensive field and an oral defense of your thesis
  • Non-thesis – Complete a minimum of 33 credit hours and pass written exams in two comprehensive fields
  • Thesis Program in Local and Community History – Complete a minimum of 35 hours, a written exam and oral defense of thesis
