Q3: What if my position/job title changes, but my role and responsibilities remain the same?

  • If your employer changes your job title, but there aren’t any changes to the Form I-983 (company role, responsibilities, goals, objectives, oversight, etc.), the student should email iss@wichita.edu with the new job title and effective date of the change.

Q4: What if I accept a new position with my current employer?

Q5: What if my job description changes, but I retain the same title?

  • If your job description changes, your Form I-983 Training Plan will no longer be accurate and you will need to submit the following:

Q6: What if my salary changes?

  • If your salary increases and results in a change to your employment that would be considered a change to the most recently submitted Training Plan (Form I-983, Section 5), you are required to complete the following:

  • If, however, your salary increases for some other reason (such as an annual cost of living increase) that does not cause a material change to your Training Plan, you do not need to submit an updated I-983.

  • If your salary decreases, you are required to complete the following:

Q7: What if the number of hours I work per week changes?

  • If the number of hours you work increases or decreases, submit an updated I-983 with new signatures.

Q8: What if my supervisor (company official in I-983 Section 5) changes?

Q10: What if my employer is bought by or merges with another company?

  • Submit an updated I-983 with new signatures, listing the new employer name and indicating the effective date of the merger/takeover as the "Start Date of Employment" in Section 3. Also submit a new Employer Memorandum of Understanding, signed by the new employer.

Q11: What if only the name of my company changes?

Q12: What if my employer assigns me to work at a client’s location?

  • The USCIS clarified in August 2018 that, “STEM OPT participants may engage in a training experience that takes place at a site other than the employer’s principal place of business as long as all the training obligations are met, including that the employer has and maintains a bona fide employer-employee relationship with the student.”  Keep in mind that students with STEM OPT authorization must be bona fide employees of the employer signing the Training Plan, and the employer that signs the Training Plan must be the same entity that employs the student and provides the practical training experience. The STEM OPT employer may not assign, or otherwise delegate, its training responsibilities to a non-employer third party (e.g. a client, customer, or contactor).
  • Please note: If the new site location is different than the site location reported on your most recently submitted Form I-983, you will need to submit a new Form I-983 to iss@wichita.edu

Please note: In addition to meeting all scheduled reporting requirements, each STEM OPT student must submit a new I-983 to their DSO in order to report any material changes to, or material deviations from, the student's formal training plan. Updates made in the SEVP Portal alone do not satisfy the regulatory reporting requirements. More information about what is considered a "material change" can be found in our FAQ.
