Humans of Wichita State - Karina

Why did I choose to transfer to Wichita State?

Wichita State University offers plenty of resources for students to succeed and has a perfectly sized environment. I knew it was the right fit once I visited campus and experienced the welcoming atmosphere. While transferring, the admissions team and staff were incredibly helpful. They answered any questions I had. When deciding which school to transfer to, WSU felt more like home, and the tuition was significantly lower for a four-year university.

What was the transfer process like, and what tips would I give to others starting it?

Transferring to WSU was a smooth transition. When I started the process, I reached out to a pre-professional health advisor. As a pre-dental student, I had a lot of questions about my degree options. Meeting with an advisor helped me choose the right classes, stay on track with dental school prerequisites and keep up with deadlines. I highly recommend that any student considering transferring speak with an advisor or admissions representative at WSU, they help make the process easier.

How did my credits transfer, and what tools helped me along the way?

Before enrolling in classes, my academic advisor Erin Hanenberg, along with Donisha Hoffine, were extremely helpful during my transfer process. They introduced me to the Transfer Gateway, a great tool that shows which classes transfer to WSU.

All my college credits transferred to Wichita State. Knowing what classes would transfer saved me both time and money. They also informed me about the Transfer Merit Scholarship. Without their guidance on the application process, I wouldn’t have the scholarships I have now, and I probably wouldn’t have paid attention to the admission deadlines.

What has been the biggest adjustment since transferring?

The class size was one of the biggest differences I noticed when I transferred. The structure of classes and the environment were the opposite of WSU Tech. There were more campus events, and lots of student organizations as opposed to my previous school. One thing I really appreciated was the variety of campus resources, like free tutoring, Supplemental Instruction sessions, and Counseling and Psychological Services. These all help students, especially transfers like me, get support and review material with someone who had already taken the class.

What resources at Wichita State have helped me succeed as a transfer student?

Attending Supplemental Instruction (SI) meetings once a week has helped me succeed as a transfer student. SI are weekly sessions hosted by a student who previously succeeded in the course. Attending sessions weekly helped me understand the class material and better my grade. The format reminded me of the smaller classes I was used to at my technical college, which made the learning environment feel more comfortable and familiar.

How has transferring impacted my future goals or career path?

Transferring to WSU allowed me to pursue a Bachelor of Science and continue my education as a pre-dental student, opening new academic and professional opportunities that have strengthened my commitment to dentistry and personal growth.
