Bio
Matthew Phan is the Speaker of the Senate for the 69th Session of The Student Governement Association. Speaker Phan chose to join SGA to make a difference within Wichita State and to advocate for the Student Body! Being civically engaged in being involved in both local governance and giving back to the community is incredibly important to me, and SGA is the best organization to join to be involved on campus! Without SGA, I wouldn't have made so many connections and friendships within my college and be where I am today. I have met so many incredible people within SGA, and it is an amazing opportunity not only to represent your fellow students but to make life-long friendships and meaningfully contribute to an incredible sense of community and belonging. If you are hesitant on joining SGA, just know that there any many students that share your passion and you will always be welcome in our Student Government Association!
Goals
- As the Speaker of the Senate, my priorities for the full Senate and my Leadership Team fall under three main points: Accessibility, Intentionality, and Senate Engagement. For Accessibility, I believe that I must make the Senate space accessible for not only senators, but for all students. That means having clear communication regarding Senate agendas and legislation in addition to making the Student Government Association feel welcoming for all students.
- Additionally, as someone with a chronic illness, I firmly believe that it is incredibly important that ensure that our Student Government Association and our campus are not only accommodating but accessible for all students. Regarding Intentionality, my goal is to be clearer and more structured in how we onboard new senators and prepare Senate workshops throughout the year by preparing workshops based off of senator feedback and areas of need from past Sessions. In addressing Senate Engagement, this entails having a deeper connection with each and every senator and working with the Executive Branch to foster participation in not only SGA events but Wichita State events as a whole.
