Karissa Marble-Flint achieved an Advancing Academic-Research Careers Award

  • Karissa Marble-Flint was granted the AARC award on August 2020
  • $5,000 grant will be used for the teaching-research activities in the discipline of communication sciences and disorders in 18 months

Congratulations to Karissa Marble-Flint, the Co-Director of The Center for Educational Technologies to Assist Refugee Learners, on her achievement of “Advancing Academic-Research Careers” award in August 2020!

 

Only 10 junior-level faculty working in the field of communication sciences and disorders are funded $5,000 by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). In addition, the awardees will be invited to the ASHA Convention to network with experienced faculty and participants from other research education programs.

 

During the 18-month funding period, Karissa Marble-Flint needs to work with her two mentors, Trisha Self and Anthony Koutsoftas, to develop and implement the teaching and research activities focusing on clinical practice research, diversity/equity/inclusion, implementation science, interprofessional education and interprofessional practice.

 

Here are some of her proposed teaching and research activities:

  • Inviting speakers to help graduate students understand "the practice in early childhood literacy and dyslexia"
  • Incorporating the theories of cultural competence and culturally-informed care in "critical thinking in clinical practice II (CSD 832B)" curriculum
  • Researching the topic "developing self-regulated strategy for writing in elementary-aged children with autism spectrum disorder"
  • Collecting data on the “sentence formulation task probes” to serve the research of autism spectrum disorder in children
