How to get accommodations at WSU

Every time you enroll for a new semester at WSU, make an appointment and come in for the new semester’s intake interview. At that time, the assistant director will review your schedule with you and determine the services you will receive for that semester.

All WSU interpreters are certified and qualified to work in post-secondary environments. They follow the RID Code of Professional Conduct and are here to provide access to lectures, study groups, special events, and meetings. The interpreters’ schedule for your classes will be set by the first week of school; however, any other requests for interpreters will need to be presented to the assistant director at least 48 hours before the event is scheduled to occur.

Our office will locate a note-taker in your classroom and will pay that note-taker a stipend at the end of the semester. We will send an email to all of the students in your class to ask for their help. If your note-taker stops giving you notes for any reason, please inform us ASAP so that a new note-taker can be hired.

Other Services

If your intake interview indicates other services are in order to provide accessibility to your education here at WSU, those services will be established by the director.

Student’s Responsibilities

  • Report any changes in your class schedule to the assistant director as soon as possible so that appropriate adjustments can be made.
  • If you know you will be absent, please notify the assistant director and the interpreter scheduled to interpret that class. If you miss 3 consecutive classes without this notification, interpreting services will be suspended until you meet with the assistant director.
  • In the event that interpreting services are needed outside of the classroom – meetings with advisors, instructors, study groups, etc – please submit a request at least 3 school days in advance. Attempts will be made to honor requests made with shorter notice with the understanding that the service may not be available.

For any questions or comments, please contact the assistant director by text at 316-461-4116, by email at or by video phone at 316-854-3032.
