Setting Up Email on Thunderbird

(Only for Lecturers)

If you need to configure an email client like Thunderbird to be able to get student mail, you need the information below. Clients will request an IMAP configuration and an SMTP configuration. Use the following information if prompted:

IMAP Configuration

  • Server: outlook.office365.com
  • Port: 993
  • Encryption: SSL/TLS
  • Authentication: OAuth2

SMTP Configuration

  • Server: smtp.office365.com
  • Port: 587
  • Encryption: STARTTLS
  • Authentication: OAuth2

About OAuth2:

The requirement for OAuth2 authentication will mean that some older or out-of-date mail clients may not be able to connect with the email service. Office 365 appears to have cut off access to older password-based methods of authenticating your mail client.

In ThunderBird specifically, the setup may not initially show OAuth2 as an authentication choice. If that happens, you can click the Re-test button after filling in the server information and OAuth2 becomes available.

Note: you may receive a  prompt for a duo code when you first submit your credentials.
