Theatre, Tech, and Tenacity: Alexandra Enmark’s Applied Learning Experience

For Alexandra Enmark, applied learning at Wichita State University has been more than a stepping stone—it’s been a launching pad toward her dream of one day starting her own theatre company.

A BFA student in design and technical theatre, Alexandra currently serves as a student intern in the School of Performing Arts (SPA) office. Her role is as dynamic and multifaceted as the theatre industry itself. She designs production programs, manages the SPA website, creates weekly newsletters, updates digital displays, and ensures essential information is accessible for both students and faculty. It’s a unique blend of creativity, communication, and logistics—all within the vibrant environment of the performing arts.

“This role has been an incredible stepping stone,” Alexandra says. “It’s given me real-world experience in arts administration, marketing, and organizational management—skills that pair perfectly with my major.”

Beyond technical skills, Alexandra says she’s grown significantly in her leadership and communication abilities. From collaborating with artists and faculty to organizing critical behind-the-scenes operations, she’s gained a deeper understanding of what makes a successful theatre program tick.

“With a small team of six in the SPA office, we rely on each other constantly,” she explains. “It’s a lesson in coordination and accountability that applies to every corner of the performing arts industry.”

One of the most satisfying aspects of Alexandra’s work is seeing the tangible results—like newsletters in inboxes and printed programs in the hands of audiences. “These materials go through several rounds of revisions,” she says. “So when I see the polished version, it’s incredibly rewarding. It’s a reminder of the crucial behind-the-scenes work that supports the creative process.”

For Alexandra, this internship has also reshaped how she sees the theatre industry. “It’s not just about what happens on stage—it’s also about everything offstage that makes the magic possible. This dual perspective has made me more passionate than ever about pursuing a lifelong career in the arts.”

Financial support from the Applied Learning Fund has played a pivotal role in Alexandra’s journey. Originally from Oklahoma City, she shares that the funding has helped with travel so she can stay connected with her family and partner. “That support eased personal stress and allowed me to stay grounded while pursuing my education and career goals,” she says.

Alexandra is also actively involved in the Wichita State Music Theatre Company and Empty Space, further enriching her experience as a theatre artist. As she works toward earning her directing certificate, her internship continues to complement her coursework, giving her the real-world context needed to thrive in both artistic and administrative roles.

“I feel more confident navigating professional creative environments, and I’m more well-rounded as both an artist and a future leader in the theatre industry,” she says.
