Open Streets ICT returns to Wichita State University’s campus for a fourth spring featuring community events, resources for families, art and food in Shocker Neighborhood.
“This year highlights PreK–12 engagement, connecting families to summer resources that support learning, growth, and opportunity,” said Naquela Pack, director of K-12 connections and special projects for Wichita State Connect.
Open Streets ICT is a community-building event on a closed street, intended to promote healthy active living and social engagement. From noon to 4 p.m. April 19, Open Streets ICT - WSU & Shocker Neighborhood will take place on 17th Street from Oliver to Volutsia.
The event is free and open to the public.
Last year, 8-10,000 people participated in Open Streets ICT – WSU & Shocker Neighborhood.
Main attractions:
- Open Streets ICT – WSU & Shocker Neighborhood is partnering with Wichita Collective Impact to hold a Summer Resource Fair with family events and information about summer programs, youth activities, jobs and community resources.
- The Ulrich Community Art Market returns for a third year. It will feature art demos by local and student artists. Artist Meghan Miller will help people make a musical instrument.
- A variety of food trucks, serving ice cream, barbecue, coffee, deserts, hamburgers and more.
- Free health testing is available at the Clearway Testing mobile clinic.
WSU groups participating include: College of Education, Hispanic American Organization Leadership, Educational Opportunity Centers (EOC), Sigma Phi Epsilon, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity Inc., Spectrum: LGBTQ & Allies, Suspenders4Hope, TRIO Disability Support Services, WSU Baja SAE racing team, Campus Recreation, OneStop Student Services, WuLug (Wichita State University Linux Users Group), WSU College of Applied Sciences and Technology (WSU Tech).
WSU colleges, groups and organizations are encouraged to participate. They can register for free by putting "on route” on their registration.
Open Streets ICT is sponsored by Wichita Park and Recreation, the City of Wichita, Wichita State Connect and Wichita Parks Foundation, among others. Open Streets ICT began in 2017 with Douglas Avenue downtown closed for four miles for biking, walking and activities.
